"The dealers began organizing with the United Auto Workers, which represents more than 8,800 casino dealers and other gaming industry workers in Michigan, Indiana, Rhode Island, Connecticut and New Jersey; at Foxwoods Casino in Connectict, which is actually one of the largest casinos in the world, 2,700 casino workers voted to join the UAW in November 2007...and the casino employers are dragging their feet and stalling and doing the usual nonsense to prevent the bargaining of a decent contract..."

"Caesars and Tropicana are bargaining but have been stalling. Bally's and Trump Plaza, where 70 percent of the workers voted to join the UAW, are stalling from even recognizing the union. Which led to the rally."

Johnnie Dorsey, a slot technician, is bargaining chairperson for the Greektown unit of UAW Local 7777. Tom Estapa, a casino dealer, is a union steward and member of the bargaining committee at Greektown.

Good things are happening in the gaming industry in Detroit -- and we’re proud to be part of the action.

Greektown Casino, where we work, is in the midst of a $200 million expansion in the heart of downtown.  Our new facility will feature a 30-story hotel, a 1,100-seat live theatre, a convention center and an expanded gaming floor.

Casinos came to Detroit in 1999, bringing tens of thousands of customers, thousands of new jobs and revitalization to a distressed urban area.  With new facilities going up at Greektown and two other gaming houses, there’s no question that the gaming industry is a success in the Motor City.

And casino workers have been a key part of that success.

National Labor Relations Board issues ruling rejecting management claims

EVANSVILLE, INDIANA -- Dealers at Casino Aztar, a riverboat casino in Evansville, Ind., have won the right to vote to form their own union. Some 183 dealers, dual rate dealers and full-floor supervisors will be eligible to vote in a union-representation election.

Tropicana casino dealers vote YES for UAW PDF Print E-mail

Atlantic City:  Casino workers won another major organizing victory today, when a majority of full- and part-time dealers and dual-rate employees voted YES for UAW representation.  Eighty percent of those participating in the election voted in favor of UAW representation; the new bargaining unit will include about 950 employees.
