Molly Brejda,Swing Shift, 5 year employee “We have to stand up for our rights. Management tells us ‘this is what we’re going to give you’, but then our benefits change drastically. When the company said they would give us 5% raises, everyone was very happy. Then my actual raise was two pennies. Some people got five pennies. We’ve had too many broken promises. Now, we want real respect. We’re going to fight for what we deserve." John Brennan Jr Dave Cantor,Day Shift, 14 year employee " I served with the U.S. Army in Vietnam, and I deal cards— because it's what I want to be doing. When I have an asthma attack at work, I sometimes cannot speak or breathe until I can take my rescue inhaler. I alert my supervisor by clapping as loud as I can, clearing my hands, and stepping back from the table before I reach for my inhaler. I've had supervisors reprimand me for not following procedure by verbally telling them I have a problem. But if I can't breathe, I can't speak. Having a union will give employees a powerful voice to make Foxwoods an even better and safer place for all of us. "
Marc Crawford, Day Shift, 15 year employee With a union, we will be able to negotiate for better benefits and wages -- like a full day's pay for vacation, sick and personal time, like other departments and positions. We also need more affordable medical benefits - the copays and prescription costs have gone up a lot. I support our union because we have lost so much in the last 15 years while I have been there. We have to stand up for our rights and be given what we truly deserve.
Dave Ellsworth, 9 year employee, Grave Shift For fairness, appreciation and respect, join me and many others in supporting our union. Because of the power of our union, I’m back at work! What happened to me is just an example of why we need a union at Foxwoods. During the 9 years I’ve worked here, I’ve had an excellent work record. Personally, I’ve never been disciplined. But I’ve seen plenty of my coworkers treated badly by management. Whether it’s seeing coworkers get points for going home sick or losing their job because they’ve been on a long-term medical leave, having a union will provide us the power to stop this kind of mistreatment. I’ve seen the hard work and dedication of my coworkers who contribute greatly to the success of the casino. Many of us, both long-term employees and newer hires, are proud of our contribution. However, we don’t think management appreciates the work we do as much as they should. We’ve thought long and hard about how to make Foxwoods a better place to work – we’re convinced that forming a union is the best way to make this happen. If you haven’t signed a card yet, I hope you will. Together, we can make a change for the better."
Greg Holmes, Grave Shift, 10 year employee "Our country was founded on the principle that people should have a voice in how we are governed. We need to stand up against the policy making methods of Foxwoods Management and establish a voice in how our lives are governed in our workplace. " Stephen J Hoppel I I Mary Johnson, Day Shift, 14 year employee " I have seen many changes over the past couple of years at Foxwoods, which have contributed to a serious decline in morale amongst my fellow coworkers. When the human element is left out of every corporate decision in their quest for profits, the employees and customers suffer. In order for any business to succeed, a " common ground " has to be reached between employees and management. Our union will provide the tool to reach that common ground. Just as Foxwoods executives have negotiated their own contracts to protect their interests and families, we will be given the opportunity to do the same for our interests and our families. "
Paul Lanoue, Day Shift, 3 year employee Raises are susceptible to change, benefits are susceptible to change, and your job is dependent on the mood of any number of supervisors. I started out as casual, then part-time, and even when I became full time things remained this way. For example, I signed up for a better health plan, for which I had to pay extra. Then three months later they discontinued that plan, but my payments remained the same. There is no stability, no security and no consistency at Foxwoods. With a union, we can make Foxwoods the first class resort we all want it to be. Unity and strength are not just good for the workers, but for the casino and patrons as well. Steven John Larrabee Jacqueline Little, Grave Shift, 15 year employee “It's really exciting to see people change from feeling frustrated to feeling empowered. We love our jobs and our customers. But the rising costs of benefits, such as our health plan, and raises which are not raises at all, take no account of the negative impact on our lives. We, in effect, end up working for less, and feeling unappreciated and disrespected. That's why I believe it's time for a union: so we can all stand together and move forward in a positive direction. “ Bill Lockwood, Day Shift, 9.5 year employee “We work hard, and we earn our vacations. People put in for vacations months ahead of time, and then management denies it at the last minute. That’s not fair at all. There's not an equal standard about who gets approved and who doesn't. As casino dealers, our busy times are weekends and holidays. We know that's part of our industry. But we need to have a balance between management and employees' needs. With a union, we’ll have a voice to make things fair for all of us, across the board.” Joseph Lombardo Don MacPhee, Swing Shift, 4 year employee ”We need a voice in the workplace. When we have ideas for improving Foxwoods, we should be heard. When we don't understand something, we should be able to get all of the facts. When we need help, we should have someone at our side that can best help us. And when we have a problem, we should be treated fairly, equally, and with compassion. We have none of this. A union will provide us a real voice, and allow us to contribute to making Foxwoods a better place to work and a better place for our customers.” Joseph W Maciejny Bill Marshall Jr, Swing Shift, 6.5 year employee ”Right now, management thinks they can do anything they want. We have no say in the changes they make - our health care quality has gone down and the costs have gone up. Something needs to be done about the unfair treatment. That’s why I’m supporting the union.” Dimitar M Matevski Chris Messinger, Day Shift, 14 year employee “I believe our union will be a positive thing for employees. Things have really changed for the worse. With inflation, I’m getting paid less now than I was 5 years ago. Before the company disbanded it, I was on the Employee Group Council (EGC), and I was chair for dealers. Management would tell us pay and benefits were not on the table. If it was important to us, they didn’t want to talk about it. I would go to bat over our concerns, but we didn’t have the power to make changes. I want employees to be treated fairly, with dignity and respect. What employees need is the power to negotiate for a fair contract.”
